RESPONSE: To achieve the realistic element I constructed an almost life size replica of the back of an old car, where the linning is rivoted to the frame to give the illusion of panels. The sides were enclosed to allow the smoke to build up. I used black matt fabric so that the white smoke would show. The frame sat on a table where a cigarette was lit below so that the camera would only see the smoke hitting and swirling within the top of the roof.
PROCESSES: Wooden constructed frame consisted of various struts which allowed the fabric to be stapel-gunned to the wood where the tilted pannels would form. The staples gave the illusion of rivots when well lit. The lighting would pick up on the creases within the fabric giving an autentic vintage look.
